A shiney, iridescent black and red (or pink) snake. Prior to shedding the skin becomes a translucent blue that obscures the normal color pattern. Tongue noticeably small. Belly color extends upward on lower sides to form 52 or fewer red bars with rounded tops. ( Count on body only; omit tail.) Scales smooth; anal divided.
